Located around 25km north-east of the coal mining town of Moranbah, Broadmeadow East is Bowen’s second producing mine and forms part of the Burton Complex. First coal was shipped from Broadmeadow East in October 2022 and the first Cape Size export was January 2023.
In May 2022 Bowen announced the appointment of BUMA Australia Pty Ltd as mining contractor for the project. The mine was originally resourced with two 350 tonne mining fleets, and this expanded to three 350 tonne mining fleets in the first half of 2023 as coal production was accelerated to build stock to feed the CHPP when Module 1 came online. This third 350t fleet has now been relocated to the Ellensfield South mining pit to accelerate the ramp up phase.
Broadmeadow East has total coal resources of 32Mt and coal reserves of 3.1Mt as of 30 June 2023.
Initial coal production from Broadmeadow East was processed under an infrastructure sharing agreement with Fitzroy (CQ) Pty Ltd, but since April 2023 all coal has been processed through the refurbished Module 1 of the Burton CHPP.
